Thy mission is ended! The danger you have been seeking is here– in the City of the Golden Spires! Return then at once– to Asgard!

Thor and his crew sail to find an unknown foe, but keep facing random dangers. At present, Loki has been captured by Queen Ula of Thryheim, and Thor has come to save him.

Ula wants Thor to be her King. If he agrees, she will release Loki. Else, she will kill his crew.

It’s important to note that Ula had nothing to do with cracking the Odinsword. She is not the unknown foe they are searching for, just a woman who wants to marry Thor.

Odin saves the day. Quite the literal deus ex machina here.

Odin tells the crew there is danger in Asgard and they have to return. In fact, he says the danger they have been seeking is back in Asgard.

What? This better be good.

They’ve sailed really far and faced a ton of random dangers, and now just need to turn around. Will the journey home be equally eventful? Spoiler: no. They’ll get promptly home without incident.

Please tell me we’ll at least learn who cracked the Odinsword…

This is Chapter 10 of the Odinsword Saga. In the first chapter, I claimed the story was at least 11 chapters. I wonder what I meant by “at least”…

Am I curious enough to find out what happens next to just read the next chapter now?

No. I’m not.

This seems like a good opportunity to mark with sadness the passing of Ray Stevenson, who portrayed Volstagg in the Marvel films, as well as Punisher in Punisher: War Zone.

Rating: ★★½, 48/100
Significance: ★★★☆☆

I read this story in Marvel Masterworks: The Mighty Thor vol. 4.

Characters:

  • Queen Ula
  • Thor
  • Loki
  • Volstagg
  • Hogun
  • Kroda
  • Magrat
  • Fandral
  • Balder

Story notes:

  • Thor calls Loki his step-brother. This seems correct. Last issue, he said half-brother, which doesn’t.
  • Ula is Queen of the Flying Trolls.
  • Balder is acting captain in Thor’s absence.
