Yet, the Lord of Asgard must first be a monarch– and then a father!
Clean story breaks are hard to find. The Odinsword Saga seems to be over. It bled into stories about the prophecies of Ragnarok. Which brings us here. For his role to be in Ragnarok, Loki is to be punished.
I don’t know if I approve morally of punishing someone for what he might do in the future.
By page 3, we seem to be onto a new story. Thor and his three warrior friends will journey to Muspelheim to fetch the Warlock’s Eye for Odin. But then, the goal of the quest is to stall Ragnarok, so it’s all one big soup.
Their quest fails before it begins when Harokin gains control of the Eye. We expect a battle with Harokin next issue. 5 pages doesn’t get us very far.
Cool splash page though.
Of course, people who saw the first Thor film will recall the Warlock’s Eye.
Rating: ★★★☆☆, 58/100
Significance: ★★★☆☆
Almost gave this a 4 in significance, as Harokin does show up a lot in the future. And the Warlock’s Eye will show up again.
I read this story in Marvel Masterworks: The Mighty Thor vol. 4.
Characters:
- Loki
- Odin
- Thor
- Hogun, the Grim
- Volstagg
- Fandral the Dashing
- Harokin
Story notes:
- Because a prophecy claims Loki will unite the forces of evil and be responsible for Ragnarok, Odin issues a decree that he is to be banished to the Well of Eternal Sleep.
- Loki is placed in suspended animation.
- Odin orders Thor, Hogun, Volstagg, and Fandral to Muspelheim to retrieve the Warlock’s Eye from the Temple of Mystics.
- Odin’s goal is to postpone Ragnarok by keeping such weapons from the forces of evil.
- The Hordes of Harokin are already attacking Muspelheim to seize the Warlock’s Eye.
- Harokin has overthrown Muspelheim; next will be Asgard, then the entire cosmos.
- All who look up the Eye fall.
