So be it! No matter what may now befall… the flesh of my flesh shall face it as one to the manner born… as only the Thunder God can! The Son of Odin knows full well… evil hath many faces… And, wheree’er it may be found… no matter what its guise… it must be summarily crushed… for such is the will of Odin! Only with the defeat of Fafnir can the dead domain of Nastrond live again! Thus must it be! And that which must be, ever shall be! For such is the wonder! Such is the way! Now, verily… I have spoken!!
We continue the Fafnir saga. Last issue, Volstagg was captured by the dragon king Fafnir.
This issue Thor and his remaining two warrior friends confront Fafnir.
We’ve seen the layout on the first page from many a Kirby comic by now, and it’s common in Kirby monster comics. A view such that the audience can see the monster but the characters cannot.
Odin watches on unhelpfully, but gives a good speech to end the issue.
I’d like to draw attention to a single panel, where Thor refers to “Mjolnir, the enchanted hammer”.
Does the hammer have a name? Thor talks about his hammer all the time. But he’s always called it his magic hammer or his uru hammer. Mjolnir?
How do you even pronounce that? Fortunately, we have the movies now to tell us how the pronounce all the Marvel words.
Here’s an article from Brian Cronin with more details on the naming of the hammer.
Rating: ★★★½, 60/100
Significance: ★★★★☆
Is learning the name of a hammer worth 4 stars of significance? I say yes.
I read this story in Thor Epic Collection vol. 3: The Wrath of Odin.
Characters:
- Hogun
- Thor
- Fandral
- King Fafnir
- Odin
Story notes:
- Thor deduces that evil remains in Nastrond.
- King Fafnir had survived by bathing in the rays of the Radiant Pool, which transformed him into a dragon.
- Thor refers to his hammer as Mjolinr for the first time.
