The theme of many of these early Thor stories is that Loki is still considered a friend and ally by Thor, yet Loki is always secretly trying to get Thor killed, usually in pretty non-subtle ways. This has been going on since they were children.
Loki has recommended a short cut through a forbidden forest, then goads Sigurd and Thor into battle. Balder is suspicious.
Thor defeats Sigurd and banishes him to an asteroid after learning his powers come from the Earth itself. That seems pretty harsh. Sigurd’s crimes were minor, if crimes they were. You trespassed in his territory, got mad he insulted you, and then attacked him at Loki’s urging.
I’m not sure Sigurd is the bad guy here, Thor. But you’ve got the hammer. Dispense justice as you see fit, I guess.
There is a famous Sigurd in Norse mythology, but this Sigurd doesn’t seem particulary similar to the traditional one.
